At sundown on March 20, 2019, the Jews began their celebration of Purim and it runs through sundown on March 21, 2019.

Purim is a joyous and raucous festival celebrating their victory over the wicked Amalekite, Haman, as told in the Bible’s book of Esther. During Purim, the scroll of Esther, or “Megillat Esther” is read and sometimes acted out. Gifts are given to the poor, and they munch triangular-shaped cookies called hamantaschen, named for the villainous Haman.[1] However, many do not believe Esther recounts true events and they, in essence, reduce it to fairytale status.[2] Yet, we know it’s TRUE!

“Today, Purim is celebrated as a noisy and fun festival. Some view it as a kind of Jewish April Fool’s Day…”[3] As Christians who believe every word of our Bible is infallible and God-breathed, we have not so jokingly dubbed our April Fool’s Day, the Atheist’s Holiday, based on Psalm 53:1:  “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”

But, is there something worse than a fool? I believe so. In the past several years an even more dangerous type of person has emerged – the one who says they are a “spiritual” person, but deny the One True and Living God.

For the past five weeks, our Sunday School Class has been viewing a video series entitled, Falling to Peaces.[4] It contains “man on the street” interviews interspersed with Biblical teaching refuting the world’s philosophies and false religions.

The fourth session included a video clip of Oprah Winfrey. In this clip, Oprah explains why she no longer believes in God as He reveals Himself in the Bible.

Attending a church service, Oprah remembers being caught up in the rapture and worship of the moment, until she heard the minister say, “The LORD is holy and the LORD thy God is a jealous God…”[5] When this minister used the word “jealous,” Oprah said something happened. Thoughts flooded her mind:   God is all; God is omniscient (all-knowing), and God is also jealous? …Jealous of me?

Unknowingly, Oprah became the victim of Satan, totally missing the point of the scripture. Reading it in context, we easily see God is not jealous OF her. He is jealous FOR her.

The truth is God created everything. He owns it all including Oprah. So why would He be jealous OF her? He’s not! God is jealous or zealous FOR her. He does not want her or any of His creation to seek after other gods, which are not gods, but Lucifer, aka Satan, the fallen angel of light,[6] and all of his minions.

Oprah is a human created in the image of God. Her life is in His hands. Nevertheless, when she sat in that church service, she was not a child of God, and the enemy took advantage. He interjected doubt into Oprah’s mind – doubt about the nature, character, and goodness of Almighty God. Confusion followed.[7]

And Oprah? Well, the enemy’s work was done. Instead of repenting of doubt, and her part in this deception, from that time on, she searched for something more than doctrine.[8] What she found was this world’s philosophy [9] initiated by and saturated in the lies of the father of lies[10]. Oprah told AARP, “I'm not really religious, but I consider myself spiritual.”[11] She claims to be Christian but believes “Jesus came to show us Christ consciousness” and “…that there are certainly many more paths to God other than Christianity.”[12]

We know Jesus is the truth, the life, and the only way to the Father.[13] What Oprah spouts is New Age gobbledygook. Satan certainly chose a good one to spread his false gospel, and he has rewarded her very well. This serpent[14] has made Oprah wealthy, powerful, and more deceived than ever. Using her sweet, charismatic way, she daily influences millions of people and seduces them with the same lies the enemy told her.

I John 5:12 reminds us there are only two kinds of people in this world; those who have the Son and those who do not. “He who has the Son has [eternal] life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” Still, “The Lord…is longsuffering, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”[15]

Lord, in Jesus name, please deliver Oprah from this snare.
