“O LORD, You are my God. I will exalt You, I will praise Your name, for You have done wonderful things; Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.”[1]

LORD God, here we are again, boldly entering Your presence on behalf of our beloved America.

This “shining city upon a hill,” as President Reagan called her in his January 11, 1989, farewell address, today is greatly dimmed. You, my LORD, know President Reagan took this phrase from the 1630 sermon of John Winthrop to the Massachusetts Bay colonists. Reagan stated, “…Winthrop…wrote it to describe the America he imagined.”[2]

As true believers, we know Jesus said it first, speaking of those who are born-again of His Spirit. Jesus called us “…the salt of the earth…” and warned about losing our saltiness. But then He said, “You are the light of the world…” like a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden.[3] We, LORD, who have Your Word in our hearts so we might not sin, are filled with Your Spirit.[4] We need to be like a lighthouse—shining Your True Light so searching souls can find You.

Yet, it feels as though we have failed in this mission You gave us. We’ve been quiet for too long. The evil in our country is growing stronger. The wolves in sheep's clothing aren’t so covered up anymore. They are blatantly deceiving the people we were meant to reach with the gospel. You, Lord, said, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”[5]

Time is of the essence, so help us, O LORD my God, to do what is right, discern the wolves, have Your wisdom permeating our being, and to speak forth Your Truth in love. Give us eyes to see the lost, but also an overwhelming love for them so we are compelled to share Jesus. The only way real change comes is if Jesus transforms the heart.

You, LORD, can do it. You established America and made it a great nation, but the enemy is seeking to destroy it,[6] maybe even before its time. So, Father God, Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, please deliver America from evil, and save it the way You have saved Your true children.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen and Amen.
