CELEBRATING AMERICA’S GOODNESS

Although I’m tempted to write another article on the lawlessness we see, I’m not. Instead, I’m going to focus on good, especially since we are about to celebrate

Americas 250th Birthday.

Lately, as I travel from here to there, I am blessed by the America 250 decorations. I have no idea the political beliefs of those who dwell in the beautifully adorned homes, but I know in my heart they love our country and are proud to be an American.

Have you seen any of the interviews with World Cup Soccer Games visitors? These international guests can’t seem to say enough good about how amazing America is—that it is unlike any other country in the world—and how our people are so friendly.

While their words make my heart swell with gratitude, I know why we are this different, and so do you. America’s goodness came because it was founded on the One True and Living God, His goodness, and for the direct purpose of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. In fact, the very first document of this fledgling nation stated so.

The Mayflower Compact, signed on November 21, 1620, was the first written framework of government in what is now the United States.[1] It is considered by some as the first written constitution in America, or proto-constitution.[2]

Although the signers were loyal subjects of King James [of Bible fame] of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Almighty God brought them to this land in the ship called The Mayflower. Before they disembarked, they created this document to govern them. It began: “IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We, whose names are underwritten…Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia…”

Our founding fathers looked to the Mayflower Compact when writing our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.[3] Intentions were good, honorable, and godly, but the evil one always stirs the pot and finds a way to corrupt.

But did you realize “good” is an anomaly? What do I mean? A few years ago, I wrote a newsletter about it.[4] My conclusion: If evolution were true, good would not have developed. Land, air, and sea creatures don’t have it. They act as they are programmed. Disciplining offspring for bad behavior like fighting or, in the case of the eaglets I mentioned, pecking their sibling to death, is not something they do. Why? Because all creation is groaning under the weight of sin.[5]

However, we see some differences in household pets—those raised by humans who possess the capacity for good. I think we bring out a little of their true creation—the one before human sin hurt them. So, why do humans do good? Jesus said it when He responded to the rich young ruler who called Him Good Teacher. “So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.”[6] In this, the Lord was asking the young man if he recognized Jesus was God in flesh. But I think there’s something more.

If the Sovereign Three-in-One God is the only One who is good

why then would humans possess

any goodness at all?

Because we were created in the image of God. Yes, now tainted by sin, but we recognize good and have the capacity to do good. However, when we are born-again and know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, our goodness becomes greater since God’s Holy Spirit fills us.

He’s the good One. Still, sin is prevalent in our time, and clearly growing worse and worse.[7] This is why we need to pray for America, decorate our homes if we can, support our Democratic Republic of the United States, and celebrate 250 years of God’s great blessing.

Happy 4th of July!

Love in Christ,

Anita
